SPEAKER & SCIENTIFIC SESSION INFORMATION

 

Our dynamic speaker this year is Dr. Daniel Becker, DDS

 Becker received a BS in Zoology at Ohio University in 1968 and his DDS from Ohio State University in 1972. He is currently Associate Director of Education for the General Practice Dental Residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Becker provides IV sedation services for dental practices throughout the Dayton-Cincinnati area.

 

Dr. Becker has published numerous articles in scientific journals, authored chapters in several textbooks and is Co-editor of Management of Pain & Anxiety in the Dental Office. W.B. Saunders/Elsevier Science Pub, St. Louis, 2002. He lectures extensively for organizations, colleges and universities on topics related to pharmacology, sedation and anesthesia, medical assessment and medical emergencies. Dr. Becker is noted for his pragmatism and his ability to convert otherwise “dry” material into formats that are both entertaining and informative.

 

Topics:

Monday - Medical Evaluation of the Surgical Patient

This presentation will highlight pathophysiological principles that provide a foundation for appropriate preoperative assessment. Particular attention is given to the most commonly prescribed medications, which not only reflect the nature and severity of specific diseases, but also present potential interactions with medication used in dental practices.

 

Tuesday, March 6, 2012 – Medical and Anesthetic Complications

This presentation will address recognition and management of cardiovascular and respiratory complications. Topics will include those that may occur as the result of a patient’s medical condition as well as those that may be attributed to deep sedation and general anesthesia.

Topics:

·         Stable angina and acute coronary syndromes

·         Bradycardias and hypotension

·         Acute Hypertension

·         Cardiac Dysrhythmias

·         Asthma and anaphylaxis

·         Airway obstruction and respiratory depression

·         Nuisance complications: delirium, shivering, hiccups and PONV
